Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you have to forego the benefits of fresh food and gardening bliss. Have you ever heard of Urban Agriculture? Urban agriculture is when an individual, friends, or neighborhood start a city garden, normally for commerce. The beauty of urban ag is the promotion of health in the heart of suburbia: Healthy food, healthy habits, healthy life.
Restaurants are often happy to buy local produce. Some Urban Farmers start local farmer's markets. Others simply donate to soup kitchens or churches. But the goal is normally to share!
Many are becoming more and more health conscious and want to understand where and how their food is grown. Urban farmers eat in-season foods, are satisfied in their self sufficiency and their health is boosted in the process. For others, their goal is to improve availability of fresh goods to struggling communities. And still others are interested in the environmental benefits. In any case, urban agriculture is a great alternative to the traditional food system.
Also to be considered is simply growing your own rooftop garden! This is the place where you can relax – your own personal oasis. (Where deer cannot harm!). Some great choices are shallow rooted or smaller plants – strawberries, peppers, herbs, greens, and tomatoes.
There are many many sites online about urban farming, zoning, restrictions, production and planning!
